A major road safety awareness event, due to take place this weekend on Teesside, is expected to draw crowds of over 15,000 from all over the North East. Ridewell ‘08 takes place at Preston Hall Museum in Eaglescliffe on Saturday July 6th and was the brainchild of Cleveland Police’s Road Policing Unit. Now in its eighth year, the family funday aims to raise awareness about road safety and to reduce the number of accidents involving motorcyclists. This year’s attractions include stunt motorcycle and pedal cycle displays by some of the UK’s leading names- such as internationally-recognised Graham Aitken from Vertical Brits/Starboyz Extreme Freestyle Stunt Team, children’s rides, cycling skills competitions, observed riding sessions with experts from Cleveland Police, a fairground and road safety and crime prevention displays. There will also be the chance to win a new Buell motorcycle by cracking a safe code. In addition the Boundary 500 Motorcycle Group, which promotes safer motorcycling activities whilst raising money for the Great North Air Ambulance and Zoë’s Place babies’ hospice in Middlesbrough, will also be on hand offering advice and information. Leading organisations have become partners over the years, including Stockton Borough Council, Bikesafe and famous motorcycle companies such as Harley Davidson. Local businesses have also given the event their backing with Simon Bailes Peugeot becoming one of the major local sponsors this year. Managing director of Simon Bailes Peugeot, Simon Bailes, commented: “I am a proud partner of this event, having had friends who have sadly lost children in road accidents. I am passionate about improving awareness in our local community about rider safety, not only amongst motorcyclists but also other road users. It is also vital that we get the messages across to young and potential motorcycle users and new drivers.” Sergeant Nick Walker, from Cleveland Police’s Road Policing Unit, added: “The aim of Ridewell is to raise awareness about road safety and reduce the number of road casualties involving motorcyclists. The day itself is always a great family funday but with a very serious message. This year we have more attractions than ever and hope to attract thousands of people from all over the region.” Doors open at 10am and entry is free.
